Hello! Greetings from Cape Cod! I am in full vacation mode, eating breakfast late and on the deck, getting ready to spend the day at the beach, reading in the sun, and floating in the surf.

No sharks spotted, so my body is safe from nibbles, in case you were worried. :D

~~

I did this meme over on Twitter (thanks [personal profile] rthstewart!) but it was fun, so let’s bring it here!

Tell me the one fic you associate with my username. In exchange, I’ll tell you a secret about that story.

It can be a scene that was deleted or never written or character motivations or even a story from my shameful past.

Ask away! Perhaps a scandal will be revealed!
snacky: (snacky blowing bubbles)
This could be fun! And maybe I'll post more, haha?

Pick any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

My fic is here.

Meme time!

Shall we have a meme?

Pick a line, and a pairing, for a microfic!

“Well that could have gone better.”
“I hope you know what you’re doing.”
“Does that hurt? It looks like it hurts.”
“He put you up to this, didn’t he?” (Alt, she/they)
“Are you kidding me? We are not ‘fine’!”
“Come out. Please.”
“Get it off, GET IT OFF!”
“I just wanted to see you.”
“Can I help?”
“I might reconsider, if…”
“This doesn’t feel right.”
“Do you want to like, go get a coffee?”
“So, come here often?”
“Maybe it would be better if we just stopped.”
“This is hard enough without you doing that.”
“I don’t want to have a baby.”
“Well no one asked me.”
“I’m not being paranoid!”
“Put me down for ‘no.”
“What do you remember?”
“Well, what did they say about me?”
“I told you this was a bad idea.”
“Oh relax, we’ll be fine.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Are… are you cooking?”
snacky: (snacky summer snax)
For the meme, [personal profile] rthstewart asked for E or G or H:

E. Share one of your strengths.

Oh hard one! I am... not sure what my writing strengths are! I think sometimes I do a good job at capturing the feel of canon, even what I'm writing is pretty far from canon. One story I thought this went well in is Beth Finds the Palace Beautiful which is a cracky premise (Little Women in spaaaaaace!) but I really wanted to make it feel like the original canon, even though I had changed so much up.

G. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

Okay, this is from Sing Down the Stars, and I'm putting it behind a cut, because it spoils the ending of the story.

So this story is a Narnia fanfic, about Rilian after the events of The Silver Chair, and how returning to Narnia goes for him... )

I really liked this because I am never pleased with my endings, and this is one I liked. :D I like how it tied the threads of the story together - Rilian feeling like he no longer belonged, Rilian's memories of his mother and how they stargazed together, his mother being a strong presence in his story, despite being long dead - and how it worked to resolve the immediate issues, but didn't give Rilian an immediate "happy ever after."

H. Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you've written and explain why you're proud of it.

From New York Is a State of Mind, but Cicely Is a Way of Life:

Joel returns to Cicely for a visit, and Marilyn is waiting for him... )

I like this because the Marilyn and Joel interaction was so much fun to write! I wish I had several more scenes with them, because I thought they were hilarious (obviously I crack myself up, lol).
snacky: (snacky princess snax)
For the meme, [personal profile] musesfool gave me AL and AM:

AL. Talk about a review that made your day.

Pretty much ANY review makes my day, ngl. But I've had some really lovely ones! Basically any of the reviews for New York Is a State of Mind, but Cicely Is a Way of Life because so many people said such nice things about that fic. I often go back and reread them to cheer myself up when I am feeling down about my writing.

AM. Do you ever get rude reviews and how do you deal with them?

Very rarely, and it's usually only only on ff.net. I usually just play dumb in response, like, "Really? Thanks for letting me know!" Sometimes I want to be rude back, but it's not worth it.

Hey let's do a meme, wouldn't that be fun! As seen on tumblr!

Leave a comment with one of these and I'll post, without editing*:

FIRST — the first two sentences of my current project
LAST — the most recently written two sentences of my current project
NEXT — the next line. meaning i will finish the sentence I’m on and write a new one, which you’ll get.
[insert prompt here] — you post a prompt, and i’ll write three sentences based on that prompt, set in the same time/setting as my current project
THE END — i’ll make up an ending, or post the ending if i’ve written it
BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project
POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective

*okay, I might have to edit some names out of an exchange fic, but that's about it.

Hit me up!

Here, I like this meme, and perhaps you do too?

Pick a paragraph or any passage less than 500 words from any fanfic I've written and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet of what I was thinking when I made or wrote it, why I wrote it, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the fic, and anything else you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

You can find my fic here, or you can look at my fic tag.

Here, I like this meme:

Give me a canon. I'll give you two or three of my favourite ships for it.

You can pick canons I know, that would be best. But if you give me one I don't know, I'll work it out with fannish osmosis. ;)

Things are going well at the new job! I keep getting high praise from my new boss, for things that I don't think are particularly deserving of high praise? I don't know, maybe I am just too hard on myself, or maybe my predecessor in this job was kind of incompetent.

Or a combo of both those things. :D

The coworkers I share my office with tell me how my predecessor was always stressed out, crying, and doing things at the last moment. This is unsurprising to me. My goals for this job: be on top of things, and no crying.

Here's a meme, by way of [personal profile] musesfool and [personal profile] bedlamsbard, three random lines from three works-in-progress:

1) Lucy dances like a Faun, sings as sweet as a Dryad, and drinks like a Dwarf.

2) She's not sure where the impulse comes from, but she finds herself saying, "You remind me of a pirate I once knew."

3) "I'd say, 'don't get your jackass self killed' but you'll just ignore me."

*************

I voted last night and got a nice sticker! But one of my candidates lost to the guy who used to run the soft-serve ice cream place in my neighborhood when I was kid. I met the guy while he was campaigning and I was like, "Yes! I remember you, from the Kone Kastle!" He was annoyed by that, and right then, I knew he was not the candidate for me.

DO NOT DENY YOUR ICE CREAM PAST, POLITICIANS! IT WILL COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU!
snacky: (montmaray)
Here's that AO3 meme that's going around:

I currently have 38 works archived at the AO3. Pick a number from 1 (the most recently posted) to 38 (the first thing I posted there), and I’ll tell you three things I currently like about it.

I know, it's hardly that many stories, but pick a number.
snacky: (snacky summer snax)
Hey, have that first lines meme that's going around:

The first lines of my last 21 stories, from newest to oldest

All back here... )

If you want to ask me anything about any of these lines, like, "why did you want to start the story like THAT?" I will do my best to answer. :D
snacky: (snacky popcorn)
I saw this on my flist, so I figured I'd give it a try.

WIP buttkick: these are titles/brief descriptions of my active WIPs. Pick one and I'll write you 100 or more new words for it. (I offer no guarantees, but I'll do my best!)

1) Narnia - untitled story about Tirian, pre-LB, an adventure he has when he is a young teen - there are treacherous plots, kidnapping, madness and prophecy, and death!
2) Narnia - a companion story to the previous, about Tirian's aunt, the Mad Princess, with the gift of prophecy. This is a character piece, so pretty short.
3) untitled Narnia/L'Engleverse crossover. Susan and Charles Wallace and time travel and and loss and love.
4) Marvel Comics - No Sleep Til Brooklyn - Steve/Bucky because musesfool asked for it, and I aim to please.
5) MCU - The Girl Is Crafty Like Ice Is Cold - a story about Natasha in which she and Clint meet up with Bucky.
6) Marvel Comics We've Got The Kind of Voices That Are In Your Face - The Young Avengers form a band. In their spare time. Because they need a break from their superhero hobby. This is the old line-up of the team though.
7) Narnia - untitled Caspian/Peter thingy, in which Peter appears in Narnia post-PC
8) Narnia - an untitled Last Battle AU in which no one dies in the trainwreck except for Susan.
9) Untitled Montmaray Journals/Codename Verity/Narnia crossover. Because Sophie Fitzosborne, Julie Beaufort-Stuart, and Susan Pevensie need to meet up, don't you think? :D
10) Untitled L'Engleverse story, featuring Vicky Austin, Meg and Polly O'Keefe, and an old diary. This is basically self-indulgent love of all of L'Engle's characters.
11) Mary Poppins/Sandman crossover - Mary Poppins is the nanny for the Endless. CRACK.
12) Narnia - Queen Susan's Diamond - a fairytale in which Susan receives a cursed diamond. Cowritten with [personal profile] crantz, it has a really good start.
13) Narnia - untitled fic about the life of Queen Swanwhite. This one has a lot of little scenes scribbled out, but nothing really coherent.
14) Narnia - spinning out of that last one, an untitled fic about Swanwhite's grandson, the last king of Narnia before the arrival of Jadis. This is a request for [personal profile] crantz.
15) And speaking of [personal profile] crantz, we also have a forever unfinished CSI/Supernatural crossover that we should finish some day.
16) Narnia - untitled story about Edmund during LWW, witnessing Aslan's sacrifice to the White Witch in a dream, but through Aslan's eyes
17) X-Files/Veronica Mars/Bones/Northern Exposure/Supernatural crossover. This is just pure, self-indulgent crack, and will probably never be finished, but I have fun poking at it.
18) Narnia - Vodka and Dreams - this is written in [personal profile] rthstewart's Stone Gryphon AUverse, in which Edmund travels to Santorini and searches for the lost city of Atlantis. More self-indulgent stuff, but I do love this one.

Okay, what can we tell from this selection? A) That I suck at titles, B) Where I was inspired by Yuletide prompts, and C) how much I like crack.
snacky: (english muffin)
Because I am a completist, I am following up on the desktop meme, with the wallpaper on my computer at work:

Done and done! :D
snacky: (listen do you want to know a secret?)
I've had a long week, (capped off yesterday by Adventures in Gynecology, whoo hoo! D:). It included work hijinks, family drama, friend drama, and a very long, very graphic, very detailed discussion with a health insurance rep over whether an endometrial biopsy was a surgical procedure or not, and how it should be covered under my health insurance.

Good times, good times. And sadly, I am out of wine. I may turn to the hard stuff.

*************

One good thing is that I have two really great doctors. I am always worried about told, "you just need to lose weight" and being fat-shamed prior to any visits. I don't know why! Neither of them have ever done that to me - they've always been willing to listen to me and work with me to find solutions to any health problems I have, but I think I have just internalized so many messages about how any health issues I have would just disappear (POOF!) if I was skinny. So I always go into doctor appointments stressed out and ready to fight (which may explain why my blood pressure is always so high at the start of the visits), and it turns out I never have to do this at all.

So, it's a relief, and I'm just grateful to have them both.

[profile] kate_nepevu is continuing the words and deeds meme here and my thread is here. Feel free to say nice things about me! I wouldn't mind it at all! :D

Aw, you guys. Remember back in the old days when we did quizzes like this all the time?

Which major arcana tarot card are you? )
snacky: (snacky blowing bubbles)
Hello! I could tell you about all the drama going on in my house (technically outside of the house) right now, but it is too long and involved and makes me crazy to think about. Basically, two things can sum the whole thing up:

1) Real life is not a reality show. Behaving like you think you're on a reality show is unappealing, horrible, and basically just demonstrates how crazy you really are.

2) There are times when life and the things we have to do seem hard, and overwhelming, and impossible. I understand this and have found myself in this position before. But if you are a woman, the solution to all these hard things is not to just lie down and say, "I can't do it! I need a man!" and ignore all the very real problems you have in your life until a man can come along to fix them.

Honestly. You don't want to know.

*************

Work is going well! My boss let me go home early last Friday, because she had been out sick all week with the flu (sweeping my company like the plague) and I had filled in for her on several critical issues with the president of the company. She said, "I just want you to know I really appreciate you. I appreciate you and all you do."

This is such a change from the last batch of asshats I used to work with, that I was a bit overwhelmed when she said it.

Speaking of the last batch of asshats, I had dinner with my former coworker and friend F last week, and she reports that the asshats are still asshatting about, that they can't keep anyone in my former position, and they have eliminated the position of my supervisor, after the last one quit and told them she wasn't taking their blaming bullshit anymore. Things are not going so well, F says. In fact, she is looking for another job herself.

Oh, how my heart breaks from them. Not.

*************

Last but not least, a meme! By way of [personal profile] musesfool:

Pick a character* I've written and I will give and explain the top five** ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.

* Try to make it someone I've written (including characters I RP'ed) or recently in order for me to answer.
** May not actually be five.
