The Replacements Announce First Shows in 22 Years

I am seriously considering a road trip for this, just to see my beloved Mats, one more time. Last time I did that was 20 years ago, when my friend Lammy and went around the east coast, following Paul Westerberg from city to city (we called it Paulspell 93). I'm trying to convince her to leave her husband and kid behind for a 20th anniversary tour. :D We'll see.

Happy last day of Rocktober! And Happy Halloween! Have some Halloween-ish songs:

Werewolves of London, by Warren Zevon
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's / And his hair was perfect

The Time Warp, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show
You're spaced out on sensation / like you're under sedation / Let's do the Time Warp again

Is the Rocky Horror Picture Show still a thing kids do? I have fond memories of going to midnight shows and jumping up to dance the Time Warp.

THE SCARIEST SONG I HAVE EVER HEARD

Seriously. If you click that link, I cannot be held responsible for damages.

************

And while I'm thinking about Halloween, have two great tv ads, from Snickers:

So, Frankenstorm is on its way. I've got batteries, water, bread and peanut butter. I don't want a repeat of last year's week-long power loss, but I'm ready if it comes. My work is closed tomorrow, so I'll be home watching things blow around. And listening to these songs! :D

It's an 80s theme today!

Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime), by The Flirts
Little things remind me of you / Cheap cologne and that damn song too

I Want That Man, by Debbie Harry
Here comes the twenty first century / It's gonna be much better for a girl like me

Joey, by Concrete Blonde

I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead / I just need some place where I can lay my head

The covers are good but the version from The Last Waltz is a goddamn masterpiece.

I am having surgery on my hand today. In less than an hour, actually! I don't know when I'll be able to type, so if I don't post a song for a few days, do not think I've forgotten. All songs will be posted when I am able.

So, when I was unemployed for that long stretch of time, one of my rules was not to watch TV during the day. I could have the TV on in the morning, when I'd watch the Today show or GMA. And then I'd watch Regis and Kelly (DON'T JUDGE) and then I'd shut off the TV and get to work on finding work. I didn't want to fall into the trap of sitting in front of the TV all day.

However, once in a while I'd break the rule, and turn on the TV if I was particularly bored, and flip through all the movie channels. There's not a lot of good movies on during the day, I have to say, and pretty much every one I watched involved Brittany Murphy in some way. This was enough to remind me why I didn't want to watch TV during the day.

Sorry, Brittany Murphy. I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but you were in a lot a lot A LOT of terrible movies. I think the worse one was the one where you were on a scandalous talk show that ruined you and all your friends' lives. Or maybe the one where you were a English girl named Jax with an accent so bad that the movie created an in-story explanation for it. Sorry, that was way harsh, Tai.

However, one movie that Brittany Murphy was in that wasn't terrible (I know, damning with faint praise) was Uptown Girls, in which she played Dakota Fanning's nanny and her musician boyfriend was played by Jesse Spencer from House. Heather Locklear was also in it. I feel Dakota Fanning's presence elevated the entire proceedings.

And today's song is FROM THE MOVIE which is why I told you that whole story. :D

Sheets of Egyptian Cotton by Jesse Spencer
Na na na na na na na na / Sheets of Egyptian cotton

It is a TERRIBLE song. Terribly terribly catchy, that is. Enjoy the earworm!

If I Could Turn Back Time, by Cher
If I could reach the stars, I'd give them all to you / Then you'd love me, love me like you used to do

Posting this song probably reveals me as tragically unhip. I don't care. I love this song. I love Cher. I have no shame, my friends. No shame.

Right-click to download.

Opelousas (Sweet Relief), covered by Maria McKee
Some sweet relief / It’s in a handshake or a lucky break / In a bottle of wine or just losing some time / It’s in the road you meet, oh / It’s something sweet / Some sweet relief

This is off the album Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams, which, aside from being a cause worthy of support, is like listening to a radio station direct from the 90s. So many great songs!
snacky: (rocktober)
Ball and Chain, by Social Distortion
Take away, take away, take away this ball and chain / Well I'm lonely and I'm tired and I can't take any more pain
