I guess I cannot do the necessary suspension of disbelief/price of admission be in Workplace Fandoms anymore because what I've osmosised of The Pitt Season 2 is a lot of "should characters X, Y, and Z forgive Character A who was abusive and also stole patient medications and -- this part I'm unclear on but it sounds likely -- also practiced medicine in an ER while under the influence? It's very important question on if his apologies were good enough or if people should forgive him or be his friend again" and I'm like "that person should be fired from the hospital, this is not a buddy sitcom where they're all over at each other's apartments and dating each other and their warm opinions of each other matter, this is an emergency room, they are coworkers in a high-pressure high-stakes environment, not friends, he should be fired and they should never see him again and get to decide if they want to invite him to their bookclubs or poker nights or whatever, but the question of 'should they forgive him, has he done enough' is irrelevant because he should lose his medical license."

cimorene: Dramatically-lit closeup of a long-haired fluffy bunny (so majestic)
[personal profile] cimorene
Our beloved floofy bun, Rowan, passed away a week ago. He was ten years and four months old (the average lifespan of pet bunnies I saw quoted some places is 2-4 years, and 10 years is the expected upper limit for his type of bun) and was healthy, cheerful, friendly, and sweet his whole life; he died very suddenly at home, apparently of old age. I miss him - he was always more friendly and cuddly than Japp - but I'm glad he had a long, happy life.

Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply

Summaries:
Ronon starts his e-mail correspondence with Sheppard's brother more or less by mistake.

For some reason, after his father's funeral Dave Sheppard keeps getting e-mail from Ronon Dex.

Reccer's Notes: This is a remix of Homework by busaikko, and they can be read in any order - this is basically a rec for both fics, Fieldwork being from Ronon's POV, and Homework, which is just as good, from Dave's POV. Ronon's in a relationship with John and as part of learning English he starts emailing John's estranged brother, Dave. Rodney then gets involved as Ronon goes to him for help. The characterisations of Ronon, John, and Rodney here are spot on, and it's both funny and moving - a wonderful set of stories.

Susan_voight podficced both stories, both separately and collated.

* We are entering primary season just generally. States vote at different times, so I beg ALL of you to check when your state is voting. If you are in an in-person vote state, research ahead of time so you can vote for the candidate with views closest to your own. If you vote by mail, take the time to look them up when your ballot comes.

THIS is how you move the party further LEFT.

Primary schedule here:

I don't know where you live, so I can't link this for you, but I find the Progressive Voter Guide online very helpful in narrowing down candidates in the often packed primaries where I live.

I also suggest looking at things like volunteer work and endorsements, because it really, really helps with things like sheriff and judicial elections, but can be useful in all sorts of primaries when you have multiple good options.

REMEMBER: Don't just vote for the big things like US Congress. Vote in every State and local race down to the smallest and on all the referendums.

State and local elections have a massive impact on your quality of life.

* Sunday night to early Monday, I had so much to do, but I did not have twelve hours to do it in. Sigh. Between prep and getting essential things set up for tumblr and added to the aggregate scaffold and the aggregate posted and the scaffold cleaned for next week and assorted other things I need to keep on top of… well, that was the night mostly gone.

Really I should have been trying to speed run a bunch of maintenance and set up for the coming week. Instead I got distracted trying to clean up after the waterfox mess after the upgrade. I'd worked on it a bit right after it happened and since and set up a temporary work around, but we were at the point the separations and inter-collations were wasting a bunch of time constantly in small increments and it was fucking up work flow, which is a problem as I'm already two weeks behind posting and it's just going to get worse, most like.

I bit the bullet and sorted it out properly. Finally. My initial estimate was two hours to fix. I am guessing it was more like an hour and half when you figure in the smaller bits of work with about an hour of it spent very early Monday morning. It was still incredibly annoying.

It is possible that over the next month there may be some duplicate tech/science/climate/history links mixed in with non-dup0licates. I am sorry about that.

I am grateful cleaning up after a waterfox update no longer takes a whole weekend to fix.

Ideally, I should be going to bed as I was writing this. It is Monday and Monday and Tuesday are a lot by themselves, but I need to pick up some food I ordered last month at the co-op. (My Co-op like a lot of Co-ops will give you a discount if you order a case of something they carry or a distributor carries, so it is sometimes very worth it to order a case of something shelf stable that gets used a lot. Also, they take food stamps.) Also, My EBT came in and I am out of a couple things I couldn't afford when I scored the supplement last month, and some of those things I kind of want for dinner tonight. Plus oranges. And juice. I suspect I'm short on vitamin C again.

I should probably also see about paying housing tax and find out WTF with the car tax before I end up blowing it on things like gas, light bulbs, and cat litter like the profligate I am. Sigh.

* Monday night we had that thing where we searched the apartment to try to find the fire, only to discover the smoke was coming from fires outside. This being terrible for my lungs and sinuses, me not having been able to get sleep because so many people calling and errands, plus the general wear and tear of physio meant I spent about twenty hours in bed (not counting bathroom breaks) with Livia. I did manage lying down physio, but the other physio was right out. I ended up just eating bread because I couldn't handle the standing required to dish out leftover lasagna and mike it.

I think the air quality must have been better Tuesday night as I smelled no fires and my lungs gradually improved after the arrival of the night winds from Alaska. I still feel crappy, but at a more bearable level.

* I continue to really struggle with my body. We had a couple days of decent air quality and I got decent rest as a result, but I still need to spend a lot of time lying down and not doing much of anything. Even on the good days I have hardly any time I can spend standing and walking, so I have to be very strategic with it. Mostly I have been trying to do tank, garden, and plant maintenance outside of that one grocery run early in the week to the closest grocery for perishables mostly. I did read most of an ILL. I shall assuredly finish it soon as it's a biography and the subject has turned sixty. (He lived to be old, even by modern standards, which given his period and lifestyle is a bit startling). I have watched a lot of netflix and Tubi and have been having thoughts about impressively political Thai drama (Queer and Horror).

If you have good suggestions for Queer and/or horror shows and movies from Thailand, let me know.

Anyway, the upside of having more than four or at best of functional out of my room time is I have actually accomplished some things. The downside is I have no sleep cycle and must accept whatever random stuff my body is doing. Even my meds cycle has been disrupted. Sigh.

Livia's been getting more and more into sleeping while pressed against me, which I liker. (she will take short naps on me on occasion, but she's very sensitive, and I think small movements I make in my sleep unnerve her if she's on top of me, where as next to me on the support pillow pressed against my leg and/or body and/or arm is companionable while allowing her higher quality sleep. She's out of her room a little more lately, but I still can't get her to curl up in her desk box, like she used to. I can get her to play with her rainbows, but she mostly isn't interested in feather time, and if she's bug hunting at all, it's while I'm lying down.

I worry. She's spent all Winter at Summer weight instead of winter weight, because she wasn't eating much in her early anxiety and grief. She's eating the summer amount now, but it's only stopped being cold at night this week. IDK.

I'm still trying to working out how to juggle bills and housing tax this month. I'm definitely not paying one of the big bills. I think I can partial pay on one of the other big ones and juggle to cover housing tax, but there's almost no margin and a bunch of things are 2 or 3x what they cost before Trump decided to fuck up the economy.

Squirrel's still on partial pay from the work injury. Their physio is going well, but we still don't know if they will need surgery. They absolutely can't help with housing tax or my bills in a pinch. They are drowning in theirs.

* I stand by my belief that a core problem all the modern Star Trek has is the truncated seasons don't give any of the episodes time to breathe. It's hard to flesh out characters properly or fully explore their arcs and also jam in plot, so both end up suffering.

In my opinion, Strange News Worlds suffers from this most and Starfleet Academy handles it best, but they'd be so much better served by the longer seasons classic Trek series got.

I love Starfleet Academy. I think everyone is doing amazing work with the resources they've been given, but I keep wishing they had 20-25 episodes a season to spread out into and enough budget to let Darem and his species mostly wear their real faces, or at least to properly do that for the wedding episode.

1. We went to Best Buy this morning to look at mice in person and I ended up getting a different Logitec one, the MX Master 3S, which fits almost as well in my hand as the Microsoft Sculpt. I set up a return for the other one to Amazon. I do like some things about it, but it felt at the same time too small and too large, and while I didn't have wrist pain after I got used to it more, it just never felt comfortable. I do like that this new one, like the one I'm returning, is bluetooth rather than USB, especially since apparently it was the USB dongle that was causing my PC's sleep issues with the Sculpt (all these years I had no idea!).

2. It was so hot today. Not the hottest we've ever had, but record setting for early March, and it just felt awful. Like that baking desert feel whenever you step outside. I'm so glad we didn't have anything that required being outdoors during the day today, just errands in the car in the morning. I did take a short midday walk, trying to stick to the shadiest streets, but even then I couldn't stay out for long. Tomorrow is supposed to be about 15 degrees cooler, so fingers crossed.

3. Despite the heat, I made Japanese curry for dinner and it turned out delicious. I found a bag of frozen kabocha in the freezer the other day so I put some of that in as well, and that gave it a little something extra, even though I didn't feel like frying croquettes with it as I'd originally planned, or doing fried eggs over top like I sometimes do.

4. This pic was taken the other day. Not even Chloe wanted to be under the blankets today!

Ugh, daylight savings, why are we still doing this???

Anyway, I got up at my usual workday time instead of sleeping in so I could get the onions in the slow cooker, and I did both the "soak onions in cold water in the fridge for 15 minutes" and wore the stupid onion goggles, and still by the 4th onion my eyes were extremely unhappy with me. *hands* Thankfully I only had 6 onions total, so it all got done, and for dinner I made French onion pasta as planned, and now I have dinner for 3 more days as well. I do love this pasta dish - and I always use bucatini, which is one of my favorite pasta shapes, so it was pleasing all around. Every time I make it after not having made in a while, I'm like, why don't I make this more often!? and then I remember the onion-slicing and how annoying it is. Anyway, definitely recommended for a delicious and easy dinner (except for the onion-slicing). I also made bacon so I have lunch for the week also.

I meant to mention this yesterday and forgot, but The Mountain Goats collaborated with Mary Chapin Carpenter to cover World Party: Put the Message in the Box (don't worry if you only recognize one or two of those names - the song is good!).

Hard to believe I hadn't been up there in a month! If it wasn't Spring yet then, it is now. Well before dawn I was on the first rise, waiting for the sun and listening to the dawn chorus, not just migrants such as Orange-crowned Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets (they don't breed here but they sure do sing), but locals, especially Purple Finches. It was wonderful. There was an Allen's Hummingbird displaying and Spotted Towhees, Oak Titmice and Lesser Goldfinches singing, and the California Thrasher was working up to singing at the north end of the trail. I also had some less usual species on my list. A flock of Cedar Waxwings made a few passes; a Double-crested Cormorant flew west, presumably to fish; there were a few American White Pelicans on the reservoir; and a single Snow Goose flew over! The list: )

The White-crowned Sparrow singing near the parking lot as I returned was quite a surprise. I don't see many up there and hear ever fewer. Must be migration!

Chris and I walked mostly around César Chavez this morning. Chris used to walk there weekly with his dog so is very familiar with it. Tide was high so few shorebirds, and over all it was pretty quiet. We saw and heard a couple of Savannah Sparrows and a flock of Western Meadowlarks, and one Burrowing Owl was visible in the second spot, though which owl that was only they know. The list: )

I didn't want to go home when Chris left so I sat in my car watching the ground squirrels; it's Spring for them, too.:) Something I couldn't identify was bobbing along just off the rocks and when I grabbed my bins, I saw it was a Common Murre. I hate when this happens. ) Head in the sand, that's me.

Recently Finished
The Suspicions of Mr Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective
Non-fiction account of an investigator who was the model for many early fictional detectives, and the case which brought him to the public's notice. This was really interesting and well-told. I listened to it as an audiobook and liked the narrator as well.

The Monsters of Chavez Ravine
Set in LA in the early 50s when the city is trying to force people out of the Chavez Ravine area so they can raze the houses and gentrify the area. The MC's dad is among the few holdouts, and when she goes to check on him, she finds that there are all sorts of monsters terrorizing the residents, which turns out to be part of a supernatural plot by one of the guys leading the push to clear out the area. It was an interesting idea, but the execution and writing was just okay.

Murder by Moonrise
Third book in the Dr Julia Lewis murder mystery series. They changed the narrator for the audiobook, which I would normally not be pleased with, since I like consistency, but the new narrator is Marian Hussey, who is the narrator for another series I like, and I like her narration a lot. I can't remember a thing about the previous narrator, so it's overall a positive change.

Fuck Off Squad
Short graphic novel about a group of three college-aged friends and their romantic relationships. It's cute. Reminds me a lot of Scott Pilgrim in tone and style.

Spellbound: A Graphic Memoir
The author is a trans woman, but she's written this semi-memoir using a cis female protagonist in her place. I thought it was an interesting way of doing things, and enjoyed it a lot.
