So, my old Kindle wasn't working. It kept freezing and rebooting itself, or else I'd have to do a hard reboot on it, and finally it just froze up and stopped working entirely.

I called Amazon, and the customer service rep said they'd send me a replacement, free of charge, even though I was out of warranty.

It was delivered today, so I opened it, and started downloading my archived items to it. I also took the cover off my old Kindle and put it on the new one, and then I went to eat my dinner. When I returned the new Kindle, like the old Kindle, had its screen frozen!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I went to the Google machine, and come to find out, the cover was known to cause problems JUST LIKE THIS to the Kindle. I hastily removed the cover from the new Kindle, and it's fine, do not worry. But it looks like I just needed a new cover, not a new Kindle.

Sadly, all my downloads from AO3 are gone, I suppose because Amazon will only archive things you buy from them. Woe.

Are you familiar with Calibre? When I got a new Kindle, I used Calibre to copy all my fanfiction items from my old Kindle to my new Kindle. It was a while ago, but I think this is how I did it:
1. Plug the old Kindle into your PC.
2. Open Calibre. It will recognize your Kindle.
3. Synchronize the Kindle library with your PC. This creates a backup of your Kindle, on your PC.
4. Disconnect your old Kindle.
5. Plug the new Kindle into your PC. Calibre will recognize your new Kindle.
6. Send all items from your Calibre library on your PC, to your new Kindle.

What I do to prevent lossage of Kindle-books, despite not trusting Amazon: I put everything I dl into a file on my desktop, and thence onto the Kindle. That way, when the dog stepped on the Kindle last year while I was on vacation, nothing was actually lost (which was a good thing, because if there's ever a time when you're going to need dubious fanfiction and trashy romance novels, it's while you're on a road trip with your spouse, two children under the age of 10, and a very large dog.)
