Verity, by Colleen Hoover

This book was not just a wild ride, but it was completely insane. All my notes are either "oh boy" or "BONKERS."

Like, it opens in NYC with a dude getting his head squashed like a grape when he falls in traffic and no one around him even blinks an eye. Evidently this happens in NY on a thrice daily basis so everyone is immune?

I honestly thought this was going to be a big part of the book, but it is NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN, so we start off with crazy and go full on BONKERS within a few chapters.

So basically Lowen is a midlist author who watches a guy get his head crushed, is "rescued" by Jeremy who is very used to this type of death because... his daughter drowned in a lake? Not because he's an EMT or an ex-Navy Seal or anything like that.

Lowen is going to a meeting at a publishing house with her agent (who she was fucking but has decided against fucking in the future, nothing to see here), and SURPRISE, Jeremy. Jeremy's wife, Verity was recently in a terrible accident and is unable to finish her book series and the publishers and Verity (and Jeremy, hot handsome used to death Jeremy) want to hire Lowen to finish the series.

Lowen, who is a dummy but needs money and is already so horny for Jeremy that she's going Pavlov's dog every time she thinks of him, takes the gig. Of course it means that she has to go Jeremy and Verity's home on the shores of a lake in Vermont and move in for a few weeks. To do research, and stare hornily at Jeremy.

Jeremy gives her the master bedroom and the first thing Lowen notices are the teethmarks on the bed, because, of course, Jeremy and Verity had such great sex. Giving the bedroom to Lowen is okay, though, because Verity has a room upstairs now, where she's completely catatonic in a hospital bed.

... OR IS SHE?!

Also in the house are Crew, Jeremy and Verity's only surviving child, and Verity's nurse who immediately knows that Lowen is there to fuck Jeremy. In fact, pretty much everyone knows that, except poor horny Lowen, who is living in denial.

While working on research for the novels in Verity's office, Lowen "stumbles" across a manuscript: Verity's autobiography. She has to read it, but very slowly, because Verity is revealed as such a psychopath that it keeps putting her off.

(She doesn't skip the parts with the graphic sex between Verity and Jeremy though. She's so horny for Jeremy that reading about him fucking his wife is all she's got to hang on to.)

Lowen learns how Jeremy and Verity met, how Verity became pregnant with twin daughters, how she HATED being pregnant with the twins because she was jealous of them since Jeremy loved them more than her, how she attempted unsucessfully to abort them with a coat hanger, how when one twin was born she had a scar from the coat hanger, how Verity decided she loved only one twin (but not as much as she loved Jeremy and only begrudgingly), how when the first twin died of a peanut allergy she decided the other twin killed her, so Verity drowned the remaining twin in the lake. Then she got in a car accident. Highly suspicious!

Highlights from the porn autobiography include:

* a fuckable dress

* "Your mind is incredible, if I could fuck it, I would."

* Lowen wondering if one of the twins' peanut allergy was a result of Verity's coat hanger abortion attempt. You know, the logical result.

* THE SCAR FROM THE COAT HANGER ABORTION ATTEMPT! "Bring me the scarred one," I said. I touched her cheek, ran my finger down the scar. I guess the wire hanger wasn't strong enough. I probably should have used something that didn't give so easily under pressure. A knitting needle?

* Verity not breastfeeding because "this infant, sucking on something Jeremy had sucked on before. I didn't like it."

* "We'd only had sex twice since her death, and he hadn't even kissed me with tongue either time."

* "Maybe he'll remember all the good times, all the blow jobs, all the swallowing."

AH ROMANCE!

Lowen also realizes Verity IS FAKING BEING PARALYZED AND CATATONIC. You know, as one does.

She does actually do some work on the book series, in case you were wondering, but she also starts fucking Jeremy. She finally gives Jeremy the manuscript to read, and of course, Jeremy decides that the only logical solution to this is to kill Verity (hilarious scene).

Verity pleads for her life, Jeremy has no mercy, and Lowen is pretty relieved, because Verity has been spooking the horny out of her.

Jeremy and Lowen decide to move away and sell the house, and at the end, Lowen finds a letter from Verity that explains the autobiography was just a writing exercise and Verity isn't a psychopath at all! She's just faking being paralyzed and catatonic (as one does) because she's scared of Jeremy and she's biding her time until she can take Crew (remaining alive child) and run. She never does that for ... some reason, instead deciding it was better to scare Lowen off... from her husband... that she was terrified of? We find out in the letter that Jeremy read Verity's fake autobiography, assumed she'd killed their daughter, so he staged the car accident to kill her, but Verity survived and decided to fake her injuries to uh... *checks notes* save her son. And also haunt Lowen. But mainly save her son. When she remembered. Also she maybe stabbed him?

None of this made any sense but it was truly a wild ride and I couldn't stop reading or shouting out "BONKERS!" (as one does).

But! Evidently there was controversy about this ending in the CoHo bookworld! People either believed Verity was crazy and manipulating the whole thing and Jeremy was totally innocent (except of the murder of his wife, whatevs, he was still hot and, like Jon Snow, super into oral sex), OR they believed Verity's letter and that Jeremy was the villain of the whole thing.

I personally feel like none of it really made sense from beginning to end, but Colleen Hoover decided to settle the issue by writing ANOTHER CHAPTER! Set after Lowen and Jeremy move away, Lowen's had a baby, Crew is creepy to the baby, and Lowen's weirded out by both Jeremy and his kid but the sex is still great. Then they meet a former neighbor of Jeremy and Verity's, and JEREMY STRAIGHT UP MURDERS HER, because? she? might? tell? people? that? Lowen? and? Jeremy? got? married? and? had? a? baby?

Jeremy's logic is that this somehow implicates him in Verity's death, so the former neighbor must be killed to save them. Now poor Lowen realizes this means that Verity's letter was true, that she was terrified of Jeremy for a real reason, that he has murdered two women and she's afraid she'll be next, and that his kid is trying to murder her baby, so she does what anyone in her situation would do.

She fucks him in the shower.

The end! And you're welcome. I might have to read more CoHo after this. :D

I love this book so much. And I hate it. But I’ll never go on another ride like Verity again and for that, 5 stars.

(Lmao I FORGOT about the guy at the beginning because the rest was so nuts.)
