I brought Irish soda bread to work and was just treated to a 20 minute rant by crazy coworker about how it isn't REALLY Irish soda bread because I put raisins in it.

"Real Irish soda bread only contains four ingredients: flour, salt, baking soda, and buttermilk," she informed me. "None of this sugar, yeast, raisins, and caraway seeds nonsense. Is that how you made it?"

I told her I used flour, salt, baking soda, and buttermilk, and raisins, because I like raisins. And I brushed the top with a little sugar.

Her: "That's better than most, but it's still not REAL Irish soda bread."

Me: "Well, and also, I didn't make it in Ireland. Don't worry, you don't have to eat it."

She did not find that amusing, I must be losing my touch! And she went back to her desk, still ranting about fake irish soda bread and how it makes her crazy.

My other coworkers have enjoyed it though. :D

so when my dad makes it - with raisins (and the unfortunate caraway seeds bleh) - does that make it Sicilian-American soda bread? Even though the recipe came from an Irishman? I mean what?

Mother Winder (she is my... great-great grandmother? on my stepfather's side) made it with raisins often. That's how it came down in our Irish family.

I've never made my own--nor have I made my own Mother Winder's tea cakes--but now that you've mentioned it I'm craving it. Seems I need to get the recipe from Mom and start baking!

I love Irish Soda Bread though I bet all the ones I've had so far have not authentic. :-) I certainly don't mind the raisins and as long as there are no carraway seeds in it, I'm happy.

(I've also been eating my way through various shops' and bakeries' versions of the hot cross bun.)

Wow, that is really rather rude.

My soda bread recipe, from actual people who live in actual Ireland right now, lists raisins as an add-in if you like. Or, gasp, currants.

Oh, how funny. Today I bought some Irish soda bread with raisins in it from the store. XD I've never had Irish soda bread before (with or without raisins), but it was on display in the bakery section and I bought it on a whim and it turned out to be super delicious. *_*

Do we or do we not have a community for real life wank?

Also, ew, raisins. But I just don't like raisins in baked goods.

I think you should experiment with chocolate-chip walnut Irish soda bread, Nutella Irish soda bread, white chocolate Irish soda bread, etc...
