Rocktober day 21

Today, we have a cover of the theme song from M*A*S*H:

Suicide is Painless, by Manic Street Preachers
The game of life is hard to play / I'm gonna lose it anyway / The losing card I'll someday lay / so this is all I have to say...

The song is played over the film's opening credits (and as the opening of the TV show, although without lyrics), and is sung in a scene of the movie, where the M*A*S*H unit's dentist has decided to commit suicide*, and everyone gathers for a last supper/funeral for him.

*Spoiler, if you haven't seen the movie: He doesn't.

*************

When I was in grammar school, I was in the school chorus, and our music teacher had us sing this song for our parents and families at the school's Spring Festival performance. I honestly don't know what she was smoking, or why no one else on staff thought it was odd for a bunch of 10 year olds to be belting out "Suicide is painless, it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please!" But I do remember the parents in the audience glancing around uncomfortably as we sang.

However, it was the Seventies, which is probably the best explanation I have of why 1) no one thought it was an odd song choice for kids; and 2) no one got fired over it. Hell, our parents were probably like, "At least it's a good lesson for them to learn!" And I can take or leave it if I please...
