Still waiting for My Secret Agent Lover Man to come along
This was the post that inspired
kyuuketsukirui's. It grew out of a discussion of gay-themed YA books. I compiled the list for Jeff, but it's nice to share! *g*
These are all YA books that feature gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender characters. I'm putting in the links to Amazon, so you can read the descriptions there, and not just go on what I say.
The two Sep was talking about:
Hard Love, by Ellen Witlinger. This is the one about 'zines, and the boy who falls in love with a lesbian girl. I haven't read this, but I've read some of her other books, and I think she's a good author.
Peter, by Kate Walker. It's set in Australia. I'd call it a coming-of-age book, but it doesn't have a necessarily neat resolution.
A couple of older ones:
Annie On My Mind, by Nancy Garden. This was one of my favorites when I was a teenager. It's dated, but it's a great story about falling in love.
Night Kites, by M.E. Kerr. Again, dated, because it's from the 80s. It's about a boy who finds out his older brother is gay, and dying of AIDS. And falls in love with his best friend's girl. *g*
Deliver Us From Evie, by M.E. Kerr. Kerr's stories are a lot more richly detailed and complicated than my one line description, but this one is told by Parr, about his sister Evie, who falls in love, not with the boy everyone thinks she'll marry, but with a girl.
"Hello," I Lied, by M.E. Kerr. This one's from the 90s so less dated. I really liked this one. It's about Lang, a gay teenager who has a boyfriend, but gets involved with a girl. I'm making it sound very simple and it's a lot more involved than that, and M.E. Kerr is one of my favorite authors, and I hope you read this one. *g*
sorchar added this older one: I'll Get There, It Better Be Worth The Trip, by John Donovan. I don't remember much about this book, except that I stole it from my older cousin's bookshelf along with The Outsiders and P.J., My Friend when I was nine years old. Still! From the 60s! NYC! That's all I got. ;-)
Some of the newer ones out now that I like:
Empress of the World, by Sara Ryan. This one's about Nic, a gifted student away in a summer program, who falls for a girl, and a boy.
Gravel Queen, by Tea Benduhn. Aurin falls for the new girl in town.
Kissing Kate, by Lauren Myracle. Lissa kisses her best friend and deals with the repercussions. This one's just okay, but I know a lot of kids like it.
Boy Meets Boy, by David Levithan. This one's about Paul, falling in love with Noah, and his friends, both gay and straight, and their relationships. I think you might like this, since it's not a big "OMG COMING OUT!" book.
Geograpy Club, by Brent Hartinger. Russel is in love with Kevin, a jock, but neither are out. They form the "Geography Club" with other gay students at their high school.
Rainbow Boys and Rainbow High both by Alex Sanchez. I liked these books a lot. The boys are very real sounding, and the books sell quite well at my store, both with my recs and without.
Almost Like Being In Love, by Steve Kluger. This book starts when Craig and Travis are teens in love, and picks up 20 years later when they come back to each others' lives. I thought it was a lot of fun.
Absolutely Positively Not, by David LaRochelle. I just read this one and I thought it was good. All about Steven "discovering" that he's gay.
These I really loved:
So Hard to Say, by Alex Sanchez, who writes the Rainbow Boys books. This one is targeted younger - to middle school readers, and I loved loved loved it. Made me laugh and cry. Xio's in love with her new friend Frederick, but he thinks he has a crush on Victor. So good.
Luna, by Julie Anne Peters. The story of Regan and her transgender brother, Liam, who's also Luna. Very, very good.
My Heartbeat, by Garret Freymann-Weyr. This is one of my favorite YA novels. It's about Ellen, her older brother Link, and his best friend (maybe boyfriend) James. When Ellen asks Link and James if they're "a couple", Link denies it and gets a girlfriend, and Ellen, who's always had a crush on James, starts a relationship with him. There's more going on than just the relationships between the three, but that's the heart of the book.
I don't really have any good scifi/fantasy recs, but I loved the Weetzie Bat books, by Francesca Lia Block which are full of magical realism.
Okay, that's enough. I'll stop now. *g*
Feel free to add more in the comments, especially scifi/fantasy ones.
