John and I were discussing how bookshop caused an explosion in One Direction teenhat fandom last week, and I explained to him one of my deepest fears:


Snacky: my bff's 12 year old daughter is a huge One Direction fan
Snacky: she texts me pics of them
Snacky: I am just praying that she doesn't have a tumblr
John: she sits you down in tears
John: "there's this monster out there," she says. "its name is AJA"
John: and you'll say "it's pronounced asia"

In Aja's defense, she wasn't actually IN this fandom, she was just writing about tinhats in her article, and used them as an example as a group of true believers.

Then they flooded the comments to call her a homophobe and a bully and a fucking peasant, and threaten to sue her, thus proving her point pretty well.

Asia, really? Huh. I've been mentally pronouncing it ay-jah. I have learned something new! (I have also re-experienced something old, namely Aja ==> kerfuffle.)

I don't think I can ever remember Aja = Asia because there's a bento place here called Aja, and "A-jya" is how the Japanese pronounce it.
