Honest to god, fandom, we're doing this again, huh? And this time we're using the word "privilege" to beat each other bloody with. Way to go. Let's be proud.
I don't even get the amount of hateful, defensive behavior I've seen on both sides of this debate. And yes, both sides. Because just as it's hateful to suggest someone is lying about the story of their repeated abuse and trauma, it's also pretty hateful to trigger someone and then be smug about it, simply because they're disagreeing with you on warnings on fanfic.
Here's what I'm seeing: Most people agree that warnings are a good thing to have on fic, and most people agree, across the board (even people I'm seeing labeled as "anti-warning"), that certain things should always be warned for. Some people disagree that certain OTHER things should need warnings and some people disagree that fandom is a community/safe space, and then all of sudden, we have claims of "purposely triggering" and "not being a good person." And, really? Really? We're ready to pass that kind of moral judgment on others, because they don't think they should always warn for character death (example only!)?
Look, I figure we always give everyone the benefit of the doubt. No one is here in fandom to intentionally trigger anything in anyone, we're all here because we love some tv show/book/movie/game/band and we've found other people who love the same thing. Sometimes people don't warn for everything, and sometimes people are going to get triggered. But no one is trying to hurt anyone, at least, I can't believe they are. And okay, sure, there are exceptions to every rule and there are some extreme cases, and maybe there are a few people here in fandom JUST to hurt people and make sure they're triggered, and you know what? Yes, they're assholes, but they're the minority.
And you know, I've been triggered reading fic. It was on a fic that clearly warned for something, something that I've read a million times and never had a problem, but I'd never read it written like this before. And whose fault was it? No one's. Not mine - I didn't know I was going to be triggered. Not the author, they'd put a warning for character death in the fic. I had a bad time, yes. Being triggered back into that headspace is not fun, and not something I care to repeat again.
But all I can do is be more careful about what I read, on my end. I take my chances living in this world, every day. I've been triggered watching a tv show, one I watched every week, one that I knew had often gruesome, violent killings - but never one before like I saw in that episode. I've been triggered by someone on an airplane, while I was flying home from vacation, and let me tell you, a plane is really not a good place to deal with that. The thing is, I don't always get triggered by the same thing, and I don't know when I'm going to be triggered. I can avoid things that have triggered me before, but I can't avoid EVERYTHING.
And I'm rambling now, and kind of lost track of my point, which I guess is this: cut everyone some fucking slack. Just because someone disagrees with you on a topic, they're not a bad person, and you're not a better person for holding a different opinion. People who don't put a warning on a fic are not trying to hurt people. They maybe just never thought about it, or didn't realize, or would gladly change, if someone pointed it out. Or perhaps they just don't consider it something to warn for. And it doesn't make them a monster either, if they decide they're not warning. It just means that in some cases, their fic is not a risk you're willing to take.
And
this is an excellent post, and probably I should have just linked to that and kept my rambling to myself.
