This is how I can tell I'm PMSing: every other song iTunes is pulling up reduces me to tears.

As I said to [personal profile] musesfool: "I think by this point in my life I am pretty inured to 'In My Life' but NO." And then "Under Pressure" came on, and I was reaching for the tissues.

However, my crying over "Under Pressure" led me to YouTube for the live David Bowie/Annie Lennox version:

I think that's my favorite live performance, ever. In the top two, at the very least.

And then I found a video of them rehearsing the song with Queen for the concert, hilariously notable for two things: 1) Bowie smoking all through the song and 2) George Michael watching them, singing along like a big fanboy:

That may be the fondest I've felt about George Michael in years.

I was looking through some old posts in my journal tonight, and I came across this prayer I wrote back in my days of working with Poodle:

Jesusallahbuddha, please make Poodle stop talking about her wedding. Please. Please.

I will do anything. I will stop sacrificing the goats. I will stop eating the babies. I will stop pouring the sugar in peoples' gas tanks. I will take responsibility for making Leslie Tompkins a killer. I will stop furbashing. I will not sic the ice weasels on anyone less robust than them. I will send feedback. I will watch Desperate Housewives (but just the opening credits). I will write slash where there are no weeping girlymen and I will not use epithets. I will stop wearing white after Labor day. I will eat all my vegetables and send the rest to the hungry. I will stop with my email pyramid schemes and cybersex scams. I will do multiplication three times a day. Just give me a sign and I will do whatever it is. For reals.

Please just let me never hear anything else about her wedding ever again.

Man, reading about Poodle is a lot funnier than working with her ever was. :D

for [personal profile] sanj. I had so much fun with this story!

The original prompt I received with the assignment said, "I would love an AU that changes either the events of the story or the setting." And I immediately thought to myself, "Oh, well, it has to be Little Women in SPAAAAAACE!" and then when I saw [personal profile] sanj's Yuletide letter and she mentioned a space setting, I knew I had to do it.

The hardest part was the temptation to rewrite the entire story and set it in space. I mean, my original opening scene for the fic was the opening chapter of LW, where Jo says "Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents!" but all of it with space references - Jo wanting to be a fighter pilot, Amy wanting new space boots, etc.

The one idea I latched onto right away was Beth being a computer program, and that was the story I kept coming back to. After I finally decided there was no way I could rewrite the entire novel (:D), I had narrowed it down to two ideas - Beth in the computer, and Jo wanting to be a fighter pilot. But that wasn't working either - the two plots weren't meshing together. So finally I realized the story was really about Beth, not Jo (I KNOW, IMAGINE!) and I cut the Jo stuff and just focused on the Beth part.

The inspiration for it was the chapter in LW where Beth tells Jo that she knows she's dying, and that she always knew she wasn't like her sisters and when they were all making plans for the future, she could never see herself growing up and leaving home, and never really wanted to. So that was my starting point - that Beth could never imagine herself in space, and the story became how she got there.

It was a lot of fun to translate LW into the future and into space. I tried to stay faithful to the original story, and to Beth's character and voice. And I really didn't want it to be a parody, which might have been easier! Beth's not the the strongest character in the original, but I felt like I had a good grasp on her and how she'd react in these new situations. I totally have to thank [personal profile] musesfool and [personal profile] rthstewart for their beta help with it - they both reminded me of bits from the original story that had to be put in (limes!).

It's pretty much everything people say they hate in fanfic: first person POV, all narration, no action, heh. But I was very happy with it in the end, and [personal profile] sanj liked it, and I got some very lovely comments, so all is good!

for panavatar, which I had originally intended to post as a Treat, but then I missed the deadline by oversleeping, so I posted it today in the New Year's Resolution collection.

I started this story a while back and never finished it, and then I saw her prompt and was like, "HEY THAT IS WHAT MY STORY IS ABOUT!" so that was the kick in the pants I needed to finish it. :D It's Bert's story of his life with Mary Poppins. Who knew I had all this backstory for Bert! It came as a surprise to me! Also, Mary Poppins is everyone's nanny, so this story has some crossover allusions.

Hello, Yuletide Writer!

First off, thanks so much for writing a story in one of these fandoms. I love them all, and will just be so glad to have any story for any of the requests.

In general, some things I love: great dialogue/witty banter, humor, stories that are bittersweet but still have happy, or at least hopeful endings. I love when stories make me laugh AND cry. I love canon explorations and world-building - what was going on here during this moment, and what was happening elsewhere, and backstory on people and things we only know a little about.

I love character studies and relationship (not just love, friendship, family, etc) stories - I always want to know more about these characters I love, why they did this or that, how they react in new situations, that kind of things. Caveat: I don't really love vignettes or navel-gazing pieces, where one character mulls for the entire story of his/her life decisions. I want interaction with other characters and dialogue.

I'm fine with romance (slash and het) and porn, but not in all the fandoms. I'll get a little more specific in each fandom. If romance/porn is not your thing, don't worry, I love gen stuff too.

I love crossovers, if they fit with the fandom, time-framewise, tone-wise - I've got some suggestions below. But no pressure if crossovers aren't your thing!

If character pieces aren't your thing, I am extremely happy with adventures of all sorts, or plotty gen stories. Like I said, I love all these characters and want to see them in action. :D

Things I'd not like in a fic: extremely grimdark stories. Unhappy endings. I like some hurt/comfort, but not character torture. Please no rape, non-con, mpreg, misogyny, extreme graphic violence, or character-bashing.

Let's get more specific back here! )

I hope that helped and honestly, no pressure to fulfill any of the specific details! Anything you want to write in any of these fandoms will be great! I'm just happy to be getting a story from you.

Thanks again and have fun!

Big love,
Snax

Today, we have a cover of the theme song from M*A*S*H:

Suicide is Painless, by Manic Street Preachers
The game of life is hard to play / I'm gonna lose it anyway / The losing card I'll someday lay / so this is all I have to say...

The song is played over the film's opening credits (and as the opening of the TV show, although without lyrics), and is sung in a scene of the movie, where the M*A*S*H unit's dentist has decided to commit suicide*, and everyone gathers for a last supper/funeral for him.

*Spoiler, if you haven't seen the movie: He doesn't.

*************

When I was in grammar school, I was in the school chorus, and our music teacher had us sing this song for our parents and families at the school's Spring Festival performance. I honestly don't know what she was smoking, or why no one else on staff thought it was odd for a bunch of 10 year olds to be belting out "Suicide is painless, it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please!" But I do remember the parents in the audience glancing around uncomfortably as we sang.

However, it was the Seventies, which is probably the best explanation I have of why 1) no one thought it was an odd song choice for kids; and 2) no one got fired over it. Hell, our parents were probably like, "At least it's a good lesson for them to learn!" And I can take or leave it if I please...

Today's song:

Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee from the movie Grease, sung by Stockard Channing
Keep your filthy paws / off my silky draws / Would you pull that crap with Annette?

This was one of those songs I puzzled over as a kid. I was 9 years old when the movie was released, and I remember saving up my money so I could go to Zayres and buy the double album soundtrack. Then my friends and I would sit in my room, and play the records over and over. Until my mother kicked us out, since it was the summer of course, and we should go outside and play. So I cleverly recorded it on my tape recorder that I had received the previous Christmas:

(Not actual tape recorder owned by me, but reasonable facsimile for illustration purposes.)

Previously, my brother and I had used this tape recorder to spy on our parents (we would hit record and leave it under the couch when they had guests over, thinking we would get something juicy, but it was too muffled to be of any use, sadly. Honestly, I don't know what we thought we'd get, we just liked to pretend we were spies), but for the Grease soundtrack, I put the little handheld mic right up next to the record player speakers, and recorded all the songs I liked (because the double album couldn't fit on one cassette). Oh, the fabulous audio quality! And since the tape recorder ran on batteries, we could take the Grease soundtrack (abridged) tape outside and listen to it obsessively in the sunshine!

But we puzzled over this song! All these references we didn't get (Troy Donahue! Sandra Dee! Annette! Annette who? We knew Doris Day and Rock Hudson and Elvis, but didn't get the "pelvis" thing). So of course, I asked my mother, who was both horrified that I didn't know and glad to explain all the teen idols of her day.

One thing she didn't explain was the word "fongool" though. "Oh, it's just some nonsense word she's saying," she told me and my friends and my younger brother, who was also a big Grease fan, obviously figuring it was better to ignore than explain. So, sure, no problem, we accepted that, and went around singing this (and all the other songs from Grease) at the top of our lungs for months.

This, of course, came back to bite her in the ass. Months later, we were on the way home from my grandmother's house, and my brother and I had the tape recorder in the backseat and were singing along to the (abridged) soundtrack. First we sang, "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee" and my father flipped out. "What the hell? Did they just say fongool? What the hell are they listening to? Why would you let them sing that?" While my mother tried to calm him and assure him we didn't know what we were singing, the song ended, and "Greased Lightnin'" began. Which was also a sing-a-long favorite. We knew the word "shit" was bad, so we never sang that, but the rest of the words? It was a song about a car! We didn't get any of the rest of it! So the following scene ensued:

My brother and I: we'll be gettin' lots of tit in greased lightnin'
My father: What the hell? Now they're singing about tits?
My mother: Calm down.
My brother and I: the chicks'll cream for greased lightnin'
My father: Cream? THE CHICKS WILL CREAM? What is this?!
My mother: Calm down!
My brother and I: With new pistons, plugs, and shocks, I can get off my rocks / You know that I ain't braggin', she's a real pussy wagon - greased lightnin'
My father: WHAT THE HELL? PUSSY WAGON? GET THEIR ROCKS OFF? WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? JESUS CHRIST!
My mother, over her shoulder: Better turn off the music now.
My brother and I: NOOOOOOOOOOOO! MUMMY! WE WERE JUST SINGING! WE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! NOOOOO!
My mother: DO IT.
My father: *lets loose with a stream of curses, both in English and Armenian, that would shame the father from A Christmas Story*

My mother patiently explained, when we got home, that we were never allowed to sing or play those songs again in front of Daddy.

And if you read that whole thing, here's a bonus song: Greased Lightnin'

Now you too can sing about pussy wagons! :D Just not in front of your dads, okay? I don't want to get in trouble.

I love how lush and dreamy this version is.

The One I Love (REM cover) by Sufjan Stevens

I kind of think the Mamas and the Papas were despicable people, but man, they made some great tunes.

The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), by Simon and Garfunkel
Hello lamp-post, what cha knowin'? / I've come to watch your flowers growin'

It reminds me of the SNL skit where Mark Wahlberg talks to animals. :D

Sorry, Bob Dylan, I like this cover of your song better than your version.

The Weight, by The Band

I love The Band! If you don't love them, don't tell me, I don't wanna know.

Gimme Shelter (Live), by The Rolling Stones

Let's rock out with The Who:

Baba O'Reilly (Live)
Don't cry / Don't raise your eye / It's only teenage wasteland

Now, I've never been much of a Who fan (sorry, Who fans) but I do like this song. Maybe because of its nonsensical lyrics (the only bit that makes any sense at all is "They're all wasted!"). Or maybe it's my fond memories of my brief career in radio, when every one of the DJs I worked with refused to play this song when people called in to request it, because no one ever got the name right. "Oh my god, you GOTTA play Teenage Wasteland, it's my favorite song, man!" They all took great joy in saying no.

Yes, I like this song because it reminds me of people being music snobs. :D

It's also the theme song for CSI: NY, which misses being the best CSI by a long shot (sorry, Gary Sinise fans). I mean, if you don't have Las Vegas, and you don't have HoCaine, there's not much point, is there?

Since she posted first, I thought I would change my song, but then I figured there are some of you who don't read [livejournal.com profile] marakara and would still appreciate the song, so here it is:

Southern Cross, by Crosby, Stills and Nash
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time / You understand now why you came this way / 'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small / But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

Like [livejournal.com profile] marakara, I just love this song, and I have ever since the first time I heard, which was when I was 13 years old. I'm not sure what it is about it - maybe it's the combination of running away from a love gone wrong and the seeking of something bigger than yourself on the sea. Or maybe it's the way the song just sounds like sailing to me, if that makes sense - I close my eyes and I can almost smell the ocean, feel the spray, and the boat rocking under my feet.

I have to say, looking at the lyrics now gives me a bit of a twitch, because the narrator seems to be blaming his "woman/girl" problems on some kind of spirituality ("But baby, I cheated because spirits were using me!") and he just knows that someday he'll find that "woman/girl" who will understand the spirits' needs. But hey, it's Stephen "Love the One You're With" Stills, so I suppose it's to be expected. I will just continue to enjoy the song and not listen too closely.

Also, like [livejournal.com profile] marakara, I am sharing the video of the song:

Sadly, the video leaves out the ending of the song which includes the lyrics So we cheated and we lied and we tested / And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do / You will survive being bested / Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you / At the Southern Cross. But! The video does have some gorgeous sailing footage! And I love how the shadowed profile of David Crosby looks so bored with the whole making-a-video-for-Stephen's-song thing, but the shadowed profile of Graham Nash makes up for it with his enthusiasm.

Wow, I didn't know I had so much to say about Southern Cross. :D If you've read all that, you deserve a reward, so here's a bonus CSN song:

Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Chestnut brown canary, ruby throated sparrow / Sing a song, don't be long, thrill me to the marrow

Another song about one of Stephen Stills' breakups! :D While Southern Cross is my favorite CSN song, I think Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is their best. The harmonies are just gorgeous.

Today, a selection of songs by Hawksley Workman!

I have to thank [livejournal.com profile] lirimaer for introducing me to his music and for sharing so many great songs with me. Here's a few I really like:

Jealous of Your Cigarette
No king, no prince with gold ring pinky / I suggest that we do something kinky

Goodbye to Radio
Goodbye to radio / goodbye to the things that we know

When These Mountains Were the Seashore
before clocks kept track of the time / when day lead gracefully into the night /before two fish that dreamed to fly / got suspicious of a miracle / and asked themselves why

September Lily
September lily / I see your dark side / I see the reasons / For all your crying

Happy Rocktober!

Let's kick things off with a song about listening to music. Oh meta!

AM Radio by Everclear
I'd be in bed with the radio on / I would listen to it all night long just to hear my favorite song / You'd have to wait 'til you could hear it on the AM Radio

I am just old enough that I remember lying in bed with my little transistor radio, with the covers over my head, hoping my mother wouldn't catch me listening to music at midnight. :D

Seen about the flist:

The first five people (or possibly more) to comment on this post get to request that I write a drabble/ficlet of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their own writing ability level.

I suppose it should be a fandom I know, but I will do my best to accommodate! :D
yuletide
I dreamed last night that I was reading LJ and that there was Yuletide wank.

People were upset because they felt that Yuletide was discriminating against them, by making them turn in their fic by a deadline, and they were protesting it. There were lots and lots of linked posts and arguing and just wank all around.

Then I read the words:

"Yuletide discriminates against chronically chrono-challenged people!"

I dunno, it's kind of sad that I am 1) dreaming about reading Livejournal, and 2) dreaming about Yuletide wank. On the other hand, any dream I have that includes the words "chronically chrono-challenged" was a good one. :D

Sing Down The Stars... )

Author's notes: Written for the 2011 Narnia Fic Exchange, for this prompt: Rillian having to prove he's himself (and not enchanted) upon his return to Narnia, possibly dealing with Miraz's son or other descendants trying to claim the throne.

Thanks to my betas, [profile] unsuitenedt and [personal profile] rthstewart, for all their help. And thanks to [personal profile] edenfalling for such a great prompt! I'd had this story in mind for a long time, so when I saw it on your list of prompts, I jumped on it. Bookverse, not movieverse, as requested, although I took the liberty of giving Ramandu's Daughter a name.

The reveals for the Narnia Fic Exchange are up!

First, I received Suffer A Sea Change, a post-Dawn Treader-movie fic, with Liliandil explaining her quest to Gael. It was written for me by the lovely [personal profile] animus_wyrmis.

Second, I wrote Sing Down The Stars for [personal profile] edenfalling.

Thoughts on that back here... )

Last night on Twitter, [personal profile] wingedflight21 tweeted:

@WingedFlight: I enjoy introducing friends to the joys of fandom through sex shenanegains. @accidentalsquid

Then I saw this tweet:

@accidentalsquid: @snacky So, @WingedFlight just told me that Peter got laid. Also, something about porpoises. Say it ain't so?

@snacky: I believe Peter getting laid is still being written. Meanwhile Susan did get laid, and Edmund thought he heard porpoises.

@accidentalsquid: @snacky And that was what you missed last time on Glee!

Madness ensues... behind the cut. )

I suspect I should be embarrassed. But, as [personal profile] musesfool always says, "we make our own fun."

[personal profile] rthstewart started it, with AU fic of her TSG series, where we learn that she ships Peter/Camel.

Then [profile] anastigmatfic took that AU to the Florida everglades and happened to mention that Edmund and Susan were in Russia.

Ruth wondered what they were doing in Russia, and I had an idea... )
